How did texting affect society and what policies where created to help?
Texting created in the society an issue that required the placement of certain policies and laws to stop it from growing this issue is texting and driving. Texting grew as we saw fast and with that growing abuse of it came like for example the Federal Communications Commission (2010) said “Forty percent of all American teens say they have been in a car when the driver used a cell phone in a way that put people in danger” (para.5). This use of a cellphone creates a distraction in the driver which according to a government association called National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (2011) created “In 2011, 3,331 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver, compared to 3,267 in 2010” (para.1) The percentage of people as we see using cellphones while driving is growing and in a survey conducted in El Paso we see that texting and driving is still happening with 25% of person out of 24 (J, Gonzalez. survey, 28/February/2013.) *Figure 5. Here we can see the percentage of people that text and drive. Even do currently there are not policies that ban the use of texting while driving, several states have passed laws against texting. For example according to Governors Highway safety Association (2013) “39 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands ban text messaging for all drivers. All but 4 have primary enforcement” (para.4) So by this information we now that some states don’t have laws against all drivers using text messaging while driving. In Texas there is no law for all drivers according to (Governors Highway safety Association, 2013, graph), but there are restrictions to novice and bus drivers. Even do more than the 85% of the people in Texas have heard about the policies and dangers (*Figure 6) of text while driving there is still according to Figure 5 person who text and drive (J, Gonzalez. survey, 28/February/2013.) |
Conclusion
Text messaging have been going this last years in a process of growth since 2010 generating bad consequences such texting and driving which required state policies for stopping this issue but good consequences have also created. Texting has been implemented in school technology for facilitate learning. Many programs have been invented from texting that create different learning abilities. We can agree now that texting is a good technology advance, but we have to know have to use it in our benefit and try to avoid bad consequences that are given. Since texting development has generated problems, now these problems are being solved and applications for texting are expanding giving easier ways of communication and even in learning. This allows persons to communicate in a different but easier way in their discourse communities providing a way to communicate. |
